What to expect:

The purpose of my draft reviews is to identify areas of growth for your writing.

My primary focus is on developing the ideas in your writing and helping you convey those ideas more effectively.

I do not “fix grammar” or look for “mistakes.” I identify concrete, constructive actions that will expand your writing skillset.

When helpful, I will recommend resources that can teach you about a specific aspect of writing.

  • Feedback is offered via track changes in the document and emailed comments. I will not make any changes in the document that are not tracked; this way, you retain full control of your writing. I will not make any direct changes to your writing or do any rewriting. If you would like to discuss the feedback received, please schedule a coaching session with me. In my experience, these types of conversations are more effective face-to-face than over email.

  • I will review writing at any stage in the writing process, although a draft review is usually most helpful after completion of a first draft. If I believe a draft review will not be appropriate and helpful for you, I may decline the review and suggest other avenues. I can provide a second review of a piece after you have thoughtfully taken into account the feedback from the first review.

  • My draft reviews are a form of developmental editing. The areas of your writing I will prioritize include clarity, argumentation, structure, organization, and support.

  • My draft reviews do not include line editing or proofreading, which means I will not correct sentence-level issues such as grammar, punctuation, or adherence to academic style conventions like APA or MLA. I may offer comments on large-scale patterns of sentence-level and formatting issues if they greatly impact the clarity of your ideas.

  • I am not able to offer subject-matter expertise or advice regarding writing conventions in your academic discipline—this is what your advisor, dissertation chair, or peer reviewers must provide.

  • Draft reviews are only available for existing clients who have completed at least one coaching session. This means we will already have an established working relationship, which helps me provide feedback that is supportive and constructive.

  • Accepted document types: Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Apple Pages, PDF.

Draft Review Pricing

500 words or fewer: $50

500–1500 words: $100

1500–3000 words: $200

3000–5000 words: $250

5000–7000 words: $300

7000–10,000 words: $350

10,000–12,500 words: $400

12,500–15,000 words: $500

Note: For draft review pricing, your front matter (e.g. title, table of contents) and references/bibliography will not count toward the word count. The word count will include footnotes/endnotes unless those notes only contain citations.

Estimated Draft Review Turnaround Times

500 words or fewer: Same-day turnaround (if submitted by 1pm PST on a business day)

500–5000 words: End of next business day

5000–15,000 words: Up to 3 business days

Actual turnaround times may vary depending on my availability.

I will confirm the turnaround time when I acknowledge receipt of the draft.

My business hours are Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, Pacific time.
